Maxillary Sinus Floor Augmentation: Lateral Window Technique

The vertical dimension of alveolar bone available for implant placement in the posterior maxilla is determined by a) the degree of pneumatisation of the maxillary sinus, b) amount of crestal alveolar bone loss, or c) a combination of these two factors. If the degree of maxillary sinus pneumatisation is the primary reason precluding conventional implant placement, then regeneration of the maxillary sinus floor is indicated. If the patient has around 4mm of vertical bone present at the desired implant site, then a closed (transcrestal) sinus lift may be an option. However, when less than 4mm of vertical bone height is available, a lateral window maxillary sinus floor augmentation procedure is the treatment of choice.

A/Prof Mehdi Valizadeh
Hailing from Iran, Mehdi obtained his doctorate in dentistry (DDS) in 2005 and pursued a diploma in implant dentistry in 2006. In 2011, he obtained his master’s degree (MSD) with a distinction as board-certified specialist periodontist after an additional 3-years of full-time training specialising in periodontics. From 2011 to 2014, he worked part-time as assistant professor in periodontics and implantology department in the dental faculty of SBMU (international branch-Tehran), whilst running his own successful private practice. Over the years he was actively involved tutoring dentists, collaborating with major dental bodies as senior lecturer and advisory board member.
Dr Christopher Ho
Dr Christopher Ho is a Specialist Prosthodontist who received his Bachelor of Dental Surgery with First Class Honours at the University of Sydney. He completed postgraduate studies in the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry in Oral Implants at the University of Sydney, a Masters of Clinical Dentistry in Prosthodontics with Distinction from the University of London and Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry in Prosthodontics from the University of Sydney. He is Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, Special Field Member of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in Prosthodontics and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists.
Dr Ho lectures extensively on aesthetic and implant dentistry both nationally and internationally. He is a visiting lecturer to the postgraduate programs at the University of Sydney, Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor at University of Puthisastra, Faculty member of the Global Institute for Dental Education and Visiting Lecturer at Kings College London, United Kingdom. He is Head of School of Postgraduate Dentistry at the Australasian College of Dental Practitioners. He is author of numerous publications, as well as Editor of the Wiley textbook “Practical Procedures in Aesthetic Dentistry” and “Practical Procedures in Implant Dentistry”.
